The Problem: Low Proficiency Levels: A Case Study in Illinois and Chicago
Recent studies have highlighted concerning trends in Illinois and Chicago public schools, revealing low proficiency levels in reading and math. According to National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data, Illinois students have consistently scored below the national average in these core subjects. Specifically, the city of Chicago has been shown to have some of the lowest proficiency rates in the state.
Reading Proficiency: Only about 35% of students in Illinois meet or exceed the reading standards, while in Chicago, this figure drops to around 27%.
